12 X 7 Carving in basswood... susan degrandpre (hugel) 1974

Susan deGrandpre grew up loving wood, and is still surrounded by wood… she lives in a log cabin and stays warm with wood fires in the winter. Her whole yard is enveloped in trees.

Susan has been carving for more than 40 years. Her father both inspired and taught her, and has ever since generously been a source of wood and tools from his own vast stockpiles. In Susan’s work as a human relations consultant, she finds a nice balance between working with her head, heart and hands. She believes that wood is therapeutic in look and feel. Carving it is meditative, an act of pure absorption and joy. Her sculptures are not only meant to be looked at, but are meant to be rubbed like worry stones… very soothing to the spirit.

It was recently said that Susan deGrandpre is perhaps one of the most “talented undiscovered artists in Maine”. She has just begun to show her work publically, although she has filled the homes of family and friends, as well as her own, for years. However, she is losing her obscurity quickly as she is now placed her work in several galleries throughout the northeast. Katahdin Home is honored to share some of Susan’s sculptures with you, in hopes that you will enjoy them here and in your home.
